Biography

Antoine Browaeys is an experimentalist specializing in quantum physics. He works in the Charles Fabry laboratory at the Institut d'Optique. His research aims to understand the quantum properties of a set of particles in situations that resist current theoretical or numerical methods. These are often cases where interactions between particles dominate. One way forward is to build synthetic quantum systems atom by atom and control their interactions using lasers to study model N-body systems: in the laboratory, this involves cooling, trapping, manipulating and observing individual atoms. The challenge is to develop intuition about these interacting systems and stimulate theoretical developments to apply them to the understanding of phenomena such as quantum magnetism or high-temperature superconductivity. Beyond these fundamental research problems, these synthetic systems, also known as quantum simulators, could solve practical problems of logistical or industrial interest. These prospects led to the creation of the PASQAL start-up, of which Antoine Browaeys is one of the co-founders. In the longer term, this research should lead to the development of a quantum computer.
