It was in a spirit of close collaboration with Africa that the Developing Countries Committee (COPED) was created in 1997, whose activities are gradually being extended to other regions of the world. Chaired by Academy member Pierre Auger, COPED embodies the French Academy of sciences' determination to contribute, through scientific development, to the resolution of major planetary issues.
