Stéphanie Debette is a vascular neurologist and epidemiologist. After founding the Institute for Cerebrovascular Health (IHU VBHI) in Bordeaux and directing the Bordeaux Population Health research center, she now heads the Brain Institute (CNRS/Inserm/Sorbonne University) in Paris. She coordinates large-scale international collaborative studies in the genetic and molecular epidemiology of cerebrovascular diseases (stroke, dementia). Her research has identified many of the genomic regions and biological pathways involved, particularly in small cerebral vessel disease, and highlighted their impact on neurodegenerative processes.

His work has also shown that genetic variants at risk of this cerebrovascular disease, which is very common in the elderly, were associated with changes in brain structure as early as the age of 20, and that developmental mechanisms were involved. Her research opens up new therapeutic perspectives, with new targets and opportunities for drug repositioning. Stéphanie Debette works to foster collaborations on a global scale, both to increase the potential for innovation and to enable equitable future clinical applications. She was awarded the Inserm Grand Prix 2024.

Stéphanie Debette was elected in 2024 to the Human Biology and Medical Sciences section.
