Biography
Moshe Yaniv is Professor Emeritus at the Institut Pasteur and Director of Research Emeritus at the CNRS.
Moshe Yaniv and his team have devoted their research to the study of chromatin structure (the DNA-histone complex) and the mechanisms of gene expression control.
They have elucidated the structure of the minichromosomes of oncogenic DNA viruses, their modes of replication and their epigenetic inheritance. They sequenced the first human papilloma virus genome and identified the viral oncogenes. They highlighted the absence of nucleosomes on transcriptional enhancers and their role in determining the tissue specificity of transcription. Characterization of numerous transcription factors, including AP1, composed of products of two proto-oncogenes, Jun and Fos, which plays an essential role in cell response to growth factors, as well as several factors that determine the development and function of the liver, kidneys and pancreas. Mutations in the latter in humans are associated with the onset of type II diabetes and polycystic kidney disease.
Discovery of mammalian chromatin remodeling machineries and demonstration of their roles in transcriptional activation during early development, maintenance of genome integrity and control of cell growth and tumor transformation.
