Biography
Pierre Auger; President of the Committee for Developing Countries COPED; Emeritus Research Director; IRD in the International Mixed Unit UMMISCO and Sorbonne University.
Pierre Auger's field of research concerns the mathematical modeling of biological systems. He has developed an original approach to integrating the levels of organization of these complex systems, which has numerous applications in population dynamics and the management of renewable resources. In the field of fisheries, he has shown that the variation in price resulting from supply and demand can lead to a catastrophic situation involving the extinction of fish stocks, accompanied by an explosion in market prices and intensive fishing to the last fish. He also showed that the maximum yield of a fishery could be increased when several heterogeneous fishing sites are connected by fish migrations. Pierre Auger has also contributed to the study of sustainable fisheries management tools, notably marine protected areas and artificial reefs.
