The French Academy of sciences is delighted to welcome 18 new members from 2025, exceptional scientists and leading figures in their respective disciplines. These appointments strengthen the Academy's influence, as it continues to promote French and international scientific excellence.

Among these 18 elected members, the Académie is celebrating a historic moment: for the first time since its creation in 1666, a majority of women have been elected within a class. This powerful symbol marks a significant step towards greater representation of women in all fields of research and innovation. The Académie, aware of the persistent imbalances in scientific careers, reaffirms its commitment to parity and diversity, while supporting the efforts of institutions, learned societies and associations working to correct these inequalities.

Another major announcement: Françoise Combes has been elected President of the French Academy of sciences for the period 2025-2026. Previously Vice-President, she succeeds Alain Fischer and becomes the second woman to preside over this illustrious institution, following Marianne Grunberg-Manago nearly 30 years ago.

Reception of new members

The results of the elections just held will shortly need to be ratified by official decree from the President of the Republic. A solemn reception ceremony for the new members will then be held under the Coupole of the Institut de France on Tuesday June 3, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:30 pm, to the sound of the drums of the Garde républicaine.
