On March 7, 2025, the Stand Up For Science movement in France is organizing a national day of mobilization in support of science, echoing the Stand Up For Science movement in the United States. In the face of growing challenges threatening the integrity and independence of scientific institutions - reduced funding, questioning of established facts, dissemination of misinformation - this mobilization aims to defend free, rigorous research accessible to all.
The Académie des Sciences supports this movement and expresses its solidarity with scientists in the United States at this complex time.

Donald Trump blocks global research
Since Donald Trump came to power, scientists around the world have been alarmed by the consequences of his policies on research. Many American researchers have been laid off, crucial climate and health projects have been halted, and funding for federal agencies has been drastically cut. The elimination of American contributions to meteorological and global health organizations is likely to have dramatic repercussions, particularly on the monitoring of emerging diseases and extreme climatic phenomena. In the field of astrophysics, budget cuts are also affecting major projects such as the James Webb Space Telescope. "This represents several tens of millions of dollars. Mechanically, we'll have a lot more constraints on our work", laments Olivier Berné, who highlights the dangers of scientific censorship in the USA, where certain words like "but " could be banned from publications, threatening the rigor and neutrality of research work. "Researchers at the Center for Atmospheric Research, meanwhile, fear an outright closure of their agency ", warns Maud Leriche. The "Stand Up for Science " movement is calling for a worldwide mobilization to defend the independence of science in the face of censorship and restrictions imposed by the Republican administration. In France, demonstrations are being organized in solidarity, supported by academic institutions such as the CNRS, the Academy of Sciences and universities.
