This condensed publication provides an outline of the essential elements of a two-day meeting
held in February 2013 by the Académie des Sciences on the use of coolants in generation IV fast-
neutron reactors. Coolants, once extracted, convey heat from their energy sources (nuclear fission
here) to colder sources, where it is transformed into electric energy via turbines. Fast-neutron
reactors (so-called Generation IV) are currently the only reactors able to produce, through the
fission of uranium, significant flows of energy at the scale of the century and far beyond, and for
all important cities of the world. Following a presentation on the general scope of the problem from
the scientific and technical perspectives, as well as from the viewpoint of industrial development,
this book analyzes four types of solutions, which concern liquid metals, gas and molten salts.
It finally highlights their common difficulties, as well as the different characteristics resulting
from these solutions, including the size and thermal regimes of these reactors. The publication is
accompanied by a CD-ROM including all the scientific presentations that were held.
