This scientific session is dedicated to Ghislain de Marsily, member of the French Academy of Sciences and Academy of Agriculture. An internationally-renowned figure in the field of hydrogeology, and an excellent teacher with a commitment to youth, he has trained a whole community of researchers in water science and management, bringing his expertise to bear on socially-vital issues in this field.

Climate change is inducing increased tensions on water resources. In some regions of the world, the viability of the land is being called into question, with perceptible consequences for agriculture and food, human health, aquatic ecosystems... Transformations in land use, agriculture and water management systems are underway, and are often questioned by society in terms of their scope, temporality and decision-making methods. These transformations call for greater cooperation between water users, a more transparent sharing of more limited, better managed resources.

This session will review the broad spectrum of scientific issues related to water: state of resources, means of investigation, effects of climate change, governance of resources.
